From Nursery Signs for Friends to a Thriving Creative Business
Interview with Marissa, founder of Pearl and Pine
Take us back to where this all started! What do you create?
It’s quite an ironic story, really. About the time my third girl was due, I wanted to buy them matching round nursery signs that have been popular lately. After calculating the cost and shipping for all three, it was going to be about the same amount as buying a scroll saw and the materials to make them myself, so I did just that.
My first two signs were gifts for friends, and soon after, orders started coming in. One order after another, and two years later, here I am. The funny part is, I have yet to make my girls’ signs.
I make nursery décor, custom logo signs, family name signs, wedding décor, and home décor. Now with the MIRA 9 laser, I am expanding into incorporating acrylic and engraving into my designs as well.
Tell us about your business and how it has evolved into what it is today.
As I mentioned before, it’s been one order after another. Consistently making and loving every minute of it. Until recently, I didn’t even consider myself a “business.” I love making these pieces for my new friends, and I am so thankful I get to do what I love every day.
There has not been a special “something” I’ve done or haven’t done. I just never gave up and am working darn hard every single day.
What inspired you to buy a laser?
I got to the point where I needed an “employee.” I can now focus on where my talents are showcased in the shaping and painting field. I also love that it is opening up doors with engraving and acrylic work.
In what ways has your business grown or changed since buying a laser?
So far, I am rather new to the laser, but I have had so much fun learning all I can do. I have been able to add several items to my shop that I would have never been able to do without my laser.
I can’t even imagine the places it’s going to take me in the coming months, much less years. It has also given me more time to spend working on new projects, or where it’s more important, with my family.
What advice do you have for people interested in getting a laser?
Do your research for sure. Not every company or laser is created equally. I also looked at it as an investment into my business. It’s a lot of money upfront, but it will definitely pay itself off in no time.
Also, if you come from the scrolling world like I do, don’t let the “die-hard scrollers” deter you from getting a laser. You do what’s best for you and your business.
Looking back, tell us about your significant turning point, or perhaps even an obstacle you had to overcome to get where you are now.
The turning point that stands out to me the most is probably when I started to offer the acrylic stand-off signs. They really took my business from a standard sign company to a more elevated level of art.
In addition, I embody community over competition and love to help other makers in any way that I can. Helping, teaching, and coaching is where I find the most fulfillment. The community I have around me makes it all worth it.
